Our two cycle snowthrower needed repair and we took it to a well known hardware and repair facility because we had heard that "they had a good reputation". They kept it for more than six months through the winter season. In late April I filed a small claim and after a few months of legal work was awarded $650.00 from the store for the trouble. Whenever I told my story to friends, they always asked which store I took the snowthrower to. In each case I replied, without giving the name of the store, "they have a good reputation" and every one I told knew exactly which store did the work. Reputations are created by people or groups, to form attitudes in the minds of others. In the case of the bad repair shop with the good reputation, it is obvious that the store effectively fabricated a good reputation image which undoubtedly enhanced their profitability and standing in the community. The moral of the story is that reputations, both good and bad, are often fabricated and usually not representative of actual facts. Consider reputation, but focus on the things you know to be true and reliable. Judge for yourself! |
